Native American Transportation
Travois- a sled used by the Plains tribes to carry goods
Sled- used to travel over snow
Toboggan- a long, flat- bottomed sled
Kayak- a canoe with a small opening
Umiak- a large, open boat covered with skins

1. Bark canoes were a favorite among Native American tribes such as the Iroquis and the
Algonquin.
2.Dugout canoes were the most common Native American boat and were much longer than
bark canoes.
3.Snowshoes used for hunting were narrow and long, while those used for walking were wide
and strong.
4. The Chumash tribe made plank boats made of driftwood that washed ashore.
5. Bullboats were round and hard to navigate.
6. Balsa boats were strong and made out of plants not wood, but wow could they float!
